    airbag removal

well its back to this question again..
my disco has a build date of janurary 98..10 years this month
im too scared to ask land rover the cost of replaceing the aigbag..
i have read it is possible to just remove all traces of the airbag and replace with equivelent parts from the non airbag model..
has anyone done this in victoria and had the car passed by vicroads

    Illegal.....

but achievable providing that the guy who does the roadworthy takes it at face value and doesnt back check the vin against what the vehicle is actually supposed to have.

and the second that you try for a roadworthy and someone does the "hello its ment to have airbags" thing you then have to put them back in...

my opinion, better to just replace the bags.

I asked price on replacement airbag modules and fitting testing etc. .....you'd need to be sitting down before I told you.
In my case it was half the value of the car to have them replaced. I also heard that LR had extended the replacement time to 15 years. ( not been able to verify that ).
You can remove them but I was told I'd have to replace the steering wheel with non airbag type and may have some cosmetic issues on the passengers side. ( when removing that module )

Since I live in NSW, what I did to my 95 Disco is probably not what you need with your Vic reg 97 Disco - however, I did come across an interesting fact regarding airbags. On the compliance plate, the Disco is stamped as a MC class vehicle - a 4WD. You might have to dig a little through ADR and Vicroads, but may find a reference to the statutory requirement or otherwise of MC class vehicles to have airbags, whatever the year. I originally thought that since my Disco was pre 97, then I could/can/did give them the flick. Later research on bullbars turned up a part of the ADR regarding supplementary restraints, and lo and behold MC class vehicles were mentioned. I had a particular motive - I find the standard size steering wheel too large and it interfered with me getting in and out of the vehicle. If the SRS is working, and you are happy with the steering wheel, best leave it there.
