    We bought a magneti marelli 2 yrs ago from our local auto pro (Hunts) and from memory it was around the $320 mark.....same as gen LR without the LR sticker.....best bet is to take the unit with you to any good spare parts place and if there any good they should be able to help you out.......

    Hi Andrew;

    Thanks for reply , John next door neighbour pulled apart the original MM and found the Bushes were worn out, so I thought whilst I have the MM Alternator out , I'd Like to replace it with higher Ampere Bosch unit , is this recommended ? will I be better off getting the existing one reconditioned thru a Auto Electrician ?
    The Problem with these Unit is the desoldering and resoldering all the Wires ? would this be the case with the Bisch unit ? I have been told to stay away from the Lucas Alternators , does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

    Mate the Marnelli 100 amp is a nice unit. When I replaced mine at 230,000k it was the original alternator. I went to Ashdowns and bought the exact same one without the LR badge for $320 inc GST (only 4 months ago) - still made in Italy and looks identical. They last well I reckon. I tried reconditioning the original unit and it failed twice in quick succession, so Im not a fan of that.

    Cheers

    I have done the same as the link above and installed a Bosch unit in my 93 RR. But recently I have been thinking, I did as noted and soldered a lead out of one phase for the tacho but couldn't I have just as easily linked the negative terminal from the coil to the tacho? I am now wondering why not? Its the standard way to get a pulse to the tacho. Can anyone enlighten me, why or why not?

    Well if its a petrol motor with an ignition coil its the normal way to get the siginal tho the tacho may not accept the signal

    This topic has been asked before - on the old forum I did a thread on what was inside a MM 100A 127i alternator in a 300Tdi, and how hard it was to source parts for it. I rebuilt the old one myself as a spare, and bought the generic MM (as described by the others) from Coopers at Tempe. The problem lies in that the 300TDI mounting needs an alternator cranked to the left. If you look at a V6 commodore alternator, you'll see that the two arms are in a straight line. Most other alternators have the adjustment arm cranked to the right. That's what prevents using a Bosch unit in a 300 TDi. On the positive side, you can get generic MM 127i alternators in 120amp at certain specialist electrical outlets - there was a listing for a place at Silverwater, but the only one I could find today was this (Look at the VG088)

    I'll post up the critical dimensions for a Tdi alt and the alternatives tonight.
    Basically the only alternative in Oz is a Transit diesel one and IIRC a Mondeo one, so you may as well get an original type one as they are the same price.
    Nothing Bosch, Hitachi or anyone else makes are remotely the same mountings.
    BTW, most catalogues list them as a Lucas.

    They are becoming more available through the wholesalers as the fella's above have outlined.
