    How do you remove a wheel sensor????

    Hi Guys
    According to RAVE the wheel sensor is part of the hub AND MUST NOT BE DISMANTLED.
    Ive seen wheel sensors on fleabay.How does one remove the sensor????

    I haven't done it my self but I believe there's a grub screw that holds it in place. You can buy the genuine hub's with or with out sensor if you shop around, naturally they are a lot cheaper "without". I had to do this when I broke a wheel stud on the Disco. So yes they can definitely be removed from the hub and replaced.

    You dont know if the hub has to be removed???? Cant see any way of getting to the sensor whilst the hub is on the vehicle.

    I fairly sure it can be done without removing the hub. I didn't do my hub change over cause I thought I'd let the local mechanic struggle with a 490Nm staked nut. I don't have 3/4" drive sockets and could see me breaking a 1/2" one.

    You may need to remove the disc shield and lift the brake caliper out of the way.

    If you are refering to the abs wheel speed sensors all you need to do to remove them is to "gentlty" pry them out. On my Defender they are only held in by friction and can be removed reasonably easily but carefully. I've had to remove one to replace the swivel seal. To put them back in they should be wiped clean from any crud/road dirt etc and then given a light smear of grease. Push them all the way in by hand until they go in no further. The manual says that as the wheel rotates it will push it back into the correct position, I pulled mine back very slightly to give it a gnats of clearance. If all goes well your abs will function correctly, ie light goes of after reaching 8kmh and the traction control light goes of after a few seconds.
    The part of the "sensor" that is part of the hub is a machined stepped ring, or in the case of the front hubs holes in the cv joint, as the wheel rotates these cause a change in the magnetic field in the sensor known as a Hall effect. The sensor transmits these in the form of pulses, the faster the rotation the more pulses per second. computer does the maths. Hubs for the rear sold as with abs sensor refer to the fact that these have the stepped ring. non abs don't. These rings can be removed by undoing the five nuts off of the studs that hold them in, but you do have to remove the hub from the axle first.

    Defender and Disco II have completely different hub systems. I would assume the ABS sensor retention method is different too.
