the gasket will set you back about $50.
g'day all,
my recently aquired 2001 d2 has a oil leak from around the sump, appears to maybe be the gasket is shot and leaks about 10-20ml overnight.
just out of interest what would you all expect costs for replacement of this gasket?.

a master of invisibleness.
Some non-genuine Td5 Sump gaskets are about 8mm too long between the two rear bolt holes so when you replace it, ensure that you use a genuine Land Rover gasket.
Cost of gasket is about $70 plus an oil change and an hour or so's labour. It can be done without completely removing the sump (due to steering rods etc being in the way) but a second person and a hoist are recommended. Also, I'd suggest checking the security (remove, clean, new locktite and retension) of the oil pump bolt while the sump is off as these have been known to come loose and cause very expensive engine rebuilds. An easy, simple and quick job and good insurance while the sump is off though.

As Roger said above. The gasket change and bolt check can be done by just dropping the sump. Is a bit fiddly and not perfect for cleaning the mating surfaces but will work. This ishow I relaced mine about 2 years ago. I took mine off in the last couple of days after finding metal in it so is also worth a check to see what build is in the sump and what nick your bottom end is in. The Rave mag says you have to remove the exhaust but I find by jacking up the cross member on the drivers side the sump will come completely out over the sump. I did remove the track rod (2 bolts) and the steering damper to make it easier.

just out of interest the leak i have only seems to occurr on start up and shut down. the wife parks in the same spot at work each day and has not noticed any stains on the concrete but at home we have a evidence in the drip tray.
also if over filled could this cause an issue, pressure forces gasket to leak?.
thanks

Have a closer look Yorkie.
Not doubting you but the sump is the lowest point before the oil drips to the ground.
Get a couple of cans of degreaser spray from supercrap, spray both cans all over the motor with the accoustic cover off, leave for a couple of hours then genlely hose with a garden hose.
Now everything is totally clean, leave the accoustic cover off(Its only purpose is to make your motor LOOK spaceage as you will find) and monitor the oil leak.
On a turbo diesel there are MANY possibilities for oil leaks.Oil filter, centrifical oil filter, vacuum pump, turbo, oil cooler, then any number of oil gaskets.
Goodluck
