I was looking at my spare axle the other day and pulled off the plastic caps.
Imagine my surprise, some charmer has welded the axle to the drive flange.
And not just tack welds.
Just wouldn't be a holiday without a nasty surprise.

Solves the worn spline problem, simply means that when you need to replace the axle you have to replace the drive flange as well. Not very good workshop practice though. Reminds me of the time we had a drilling rig in the workshop for overhaul in 1963 - it turned out that the previous operator's favourite tool was an electric welder.........

On a front axle its bad.
But I have seen a series 2a last over 20 years like that on the rear axle
