Higher tyre pressures, less right boot + short shifting can bring that down to about 15-17l/100
hey guys i have just bought a 97 v8i 5sp manual disco, what sort of milage should i expect from the great beasty now its about 20l/100km
, at the moment my my 520hp kenworth is about to put it to shame. other than the obvious lpg conversion is there any tricks to improve the milage.

Yes, lots. One of the best things you can do is extractors & a free flowing exhaust. I use a K&N filter for the road.
I get about 15L /100 around town & 13- 13.5/ 100 on the highway with air running.
( I still have to fit the extractors, have the rest done though.)
Hi you all,
I have just joined this forum to simply get an idea of the fuel economy for a 99 Disco II running dual fuel that I WAS thinking of buying, but from the figures mentioned above, I reckon that I'll give it a miss.
Those sort of figures are obscene!
Not as obscene as a Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol.
If you want better economy look at a 2003? high compression Thor. They are quite a bit better.
It takes a certain amount of power to move 2 tonnes plus.
From what I have read a Pathfinder V6 gives about the same and so does my son's Jackeroo 3.5.
But a Disco 11 will either have GEMS or Motronic injection which are quite sophisticated and hard to get better economy from.

The Kenworths power to weigh ratio is far better
You may also notice that the "Kenny" has a better air intake and exhaust than the Disco.
Open the bonnet and have a look at the think it sucks air from
(I'm in the process of fitting a snorkel.)
Then have a look at the twin pipes coming from the manifold, being reduced to a single pipe, then joins a larger one and goes through a very restrictive muffer system.
(That is next on my list, a large bore exhaust with flow through mufflers).
The motor itself is rather powerless, so I'm now looking at a CROW Cam that delivers max torque from 1000 to 3000 rpm. It may help!
Best idea would be a 4.6 motor
Cheers,
given what some of the guys at work are saying about the new toymotas and pootrols 20l/100 is what they are getting from the new Diesels..... THATS an obscene fuel figure.
if you want to get the numbers better than 15l/100 nominal in a disco v8 let it breath better with a decent inlet and a cleaner flowing exhaust as otherwised mentioned. With that and nice driving to have a guess I think you could return low 13s to high 12s for the l/100.

Hmmmm....
I am fairly new to this forum but I will weigh in on this one.
I am a confirmed V8 a'holic.
I have owned all manner of V8's from mild to wild and if I was ever concerned with economy I would not buy them!
I drive my 3.9 manual disco hard and manage to get a worse of about 21/100 but recon I average about 18-19/100.
I would dearly love to get a few more HP out of it (that's a future story) but if I really need economy I would go buy a diesel.
I have alway been of the opinion that the fuel is the cheapest part of motoring (specially 4x4ing).
Keep your V8 (& the rest of the vehicle) well maintained and that's it!
I do however run on the best premium fuel available.
Going LPG is a false econmoy (other than a taxi, courier or big Klm work horse that you will not be keeping long term) I have been this route several times and learnt buy experience FWIW.
I am currently keeping some acurate records of my V8 and total running costs (only for the purpose of vindicating the V8) and hope to post some facts and figures later down the track.
You either love or loathe V8's.
They are like a drug to a weak sole like me.
Gotta be better than Crack or Ice I supose.
Dave,
Interesting that you should mention "obscene fuel figure".
That is exactly what mine did when I first bought it.
Q. Problem?
A. Faulty advance retard unit.
Kingyrules,
Take the plastic pipe off the advance retard unit and suck on it. If you get no resistance, there is your first problem
Cheers
