    Question Do or Dont Suspension???

    Hi All…

Ok I know this Suspension thing has been covered on various occasions!
But i havent found the Answers to this one as yet...

Im looking at investing in a new Suspension Set up
Consisting of king Springs & KONI Long Travel Shocks for a 2-2.5in lift.

What i want is the best onroad manners i can get! with a little lift as well...

This is to go on an 01 Discovery TD5 Auto that’s done about 94000ks
The Vehicle is thus far Stock Standard except for new Tyres being one size up (245/70/16)

What id like to know is what improvement has veryone seen in doing a suspension upgrade like this and is/was it worth the $$$?

The rig is mainly used for on road touring 90% of the time with some light offroad from time to time when we head away no towing and is never packed up like a donky!

    Your feed back welcomed….

So why a 2 inch lift? Light offroading usually means "some rough tracks to get somewhere", not "lets look for something to ruin my car".

In my experience, standard height is usually ok for light offroad (unless your new tyres are scrubbing on the guards). Unless its looks you're after, in which case improvement factor is up to you .

A lift is justified by the person behind the wheel. If you're getting stuck on every track and want to go further down them, do it. For some, standard height is plenty (was for me for years), and others aren't happy with anything less than 4 inches and 35" muddies.

However, i can't comment on your brand choice (others here have more experience on that). But sounds good to me...

If you spend most of your time on-road then just go for the shocks and forget about springs

    shock advice

Use Bilstein shocks - they are the best. Rangie Spares in Melb will sell you springs at reasonable rates and they have a wide selection. see their web site. You could probably use standard shocks even with a 2 inch lift. Over 2inches and the on road handling suffers. I raised my series 1 by two inches after fitting a long range tank which hung low and often scraped when doing a bit of rough stuff that involved rock steps etc and the handling didn't suffer at all.

I cant quote for a D2 but I think the disco1, in terms of bang for your buck, is the ducks nuts when its got a 2 inch spring lift (brake lines+ shockies to match) and 7.5r16 rubber which is about the next size up from stock when your looking at metric rubber.

The steering does tend to get a mite umm "perky" but its not unmanagable.

And the best part is that since all the parts you replace to do just a 2 inch spring lift are parts that wear out its essentially a free upgrade when you replace the broken bits... you would have had to replace them anyway why not replace them with something better.

Hey Guys thanks for the replies so far….
I guess what I would like to emphasize is the handling of the car.
As Stock, it handles like a boat in certain situations….
In corners it is soft and wallow-y and over pot holes and speed humps it can be harsh!
Im not sure if this is just TD5 Suspension?
I really want very good onroad performance!!

If you're after handling, then ACE of course if it's fitted. Raising generally isn't good for handling, though you may want it for other reasons. Stiffer springs will probably help with body control and handling but most definately tying it all down with some really well controlling shocks will do volumes also.

This setup will be good and you'll find it will handle a bit better on and offroad

If you fit it yourself you'll save $$$$$ and it will only take you 2hrs max to do it.
