Yeah don't stress Pat I didnt take any offense to your post, quite the opposite. I got a good laugh as it was the exact response I was expecting.

Yes I am running an anti-corrosive coolant (not just water). And I expect that you are correct ie. that the liner is leaking, as none of the core plugs leak and it does not appear to be a gasket problem (for those of you not familiar with the motor, the head gasket does not seal the liner if the O ring is leaking).

There does not appear to be any evidence of corrosion on the top of the block, but the next step will still be to pop the liners and replace the O rings.

I am not quite ready to do a transplant yet, as I have way too many spares for the VM that I have acquired since getting the car and I would really like to keep the engine original (I use my S3 for playing around with different engines and gearboxes) and most importantly I don't want to let it beat me, but as EVERYONE has said if things keep going this way I wont have much of a choice and will end up re powering with a 300TDi (Very good idea getting a rear ended insurance rite off disco, Thanks mate).

I had VM Rangie so been there. The alloy in the heads was of poor quality hence all the cracking problems. In regard to head fitting etc try your local Volvo truck repairer as these trucks have had individual heads for 20+ years so the mechanics would have the most experience with these type of problems. VM Motori is now owned by GM-Detroit Diesel.
    Best of luck.
