do we have any transmission experts here......? re: BTR 93LE

its for a 97 el falcon.......

the oil cooler blew in the radiator and it seem to have got a tiny amount of water in the auto.......
mainly it went the other way and pumped the oil into the cooling system.....

there was bugger all water in the auto oil........the oil was replaced and flushed out......and the filter was also replaced......

after it was all fixed...it was ok for a while......but now 3 weeks later its playing up......

    its holding first till 3000rpm......
its changing erratically if and when it feels like it.......
and its even holding two gears at the same time....?

anyone got any ideas......im thinking maybe theres a bit of crud in the valve body......
unless others have had any experience with these boxes......

and no........i am not allowed to convert it to manual......as its the wifes car.....
    and she cant drive manual.......

Don't hold me to this, but if i remember correctly i think the friction plates have some sought of paper on them as apposed to aftermarket kevlar ones, water destroys them quickly, had the same thing happen to an old borg warner 41.

are they that sensitive.......there was hardly any water in there......the oil hadnt even changed colour to brown........

and it would have only run long enough to drive on and off the tow truck with the water in it......
and from there up onto a hoist.......

the earlier corkish type are that sensitive.... (I know its not cork but when you first get the matierial before you oil soak it and use it it looks like cork so I will refer to it as such for the rest of this post)

the cork will trap and hold the mouisture which makes the cork expand making it grip the drum which begins to shred it off. dollars to donuts says that once the material begins to disintergrate it will continue.

Bet your next oil drop/filter change has crud in it and it will get worse.
however little water you thought got in there I'll tip there was more than you thought as there a squillions of little places for it to sit and bid its time before again having another go round inside your box to find your friction material.

George130 has had spectacular failure of his TC lockup plate due to this.

No expert here but check the wiring loom to the auto as it is all controlled by the computer. Sometimes the loom drops onto the exhaust and burns it a bit in the EL.

I have seen several Fords from 1995 to 1997 where the Auto fluid tank inside the radiator ruptures but it all mainly goes into the radiator and ends up as gue all through it.

The box's usually die from mechanical problems about the 150 - 170 klms mark if they do not have the tow pack fitted which is not routing the cooling through the radiator but through an external oil cooler. You may have accellerated yours.

I had an 1997 EL Fairmont Ghia auto with the 5 litre tickford engine and GTHO suspension factory built. They are a great build but only thing that really went wrong was the auto at 160 klms, symptoms were it would change down to 2nd for no reason and really scary if you are doing 110 klm at the time. Traded it and my 1996 patrol in for the MY2003 Disco.

from what you guys are saying......i think i should just replace the box......

its done over 170,000kms.........all the oil did get into the cooling system.....and thats all been flushed now.......
    all nice and green again........

but the box has started to play up since then......i was thinking of dropping the valve body out and giving it a clean......
and also testing the solenoids.....which are known for giving problems......

the biggest concern is when it has happened........ right after the auto cooler split.....

Welcome to the record breakers. We were told the falcon gearbox isn't supposed to last that long.
Very little water will destroy the friction material. As BlkNight said that's what killed my Lock up clutch in the torque converter. Tiny bit of water got in there and due to how it works stayed in the TC. Chances are that is your problem. Was also told it's common in the Falcon's that once they play up and gets a service it only lasts a couple of weeks before going back for a rebuild.
