real bad news from my weekend misadventures

    hi all
a quick help to see if anyone has a transfer case for a defender td5 5speed manual sitting around? it looks like mine might be a bit stuffed!
after me adventures at cityview 4wd park on sunday (see other posts.) i ended up with two broken rear axles, one rear flange & we thought a front diff centre.
however the mechanic has just called to say the front diff is unhurt. great news except there is a horrible crunching noise coming intermittantly from the front when you engage the gears.
we are guessing at this point it is transfer case & i reckon the reverse idler gear has chipped & few teeth. any ideas or help would be appreciated.

    Hi Adam,

Haven't seen you for years! I tried to reply to your last post then it disappeared??? Sorry to hear about your problems.

It is unusual to break a t-case. But the good news is you can often pick up a good one cheaply from a wreckers (I think trav picked up a cheap LT230).

Does anything change in the noise if you disengage or engage the CDL, or remove the front prop?

Did you have the centre diff lock engaged when the you broke the rear axles? You could have rooted it if it wasn't engaged. A friend of mine got his blown up by gas converter when they run his deefer on a two wheel only dyno. They don't take much to pop and that's why LR put a big warning essay on the sticker underneath the fues box!

When you say "when you engage the gears" - does that mean driving or stationary?

If driving, is the noise regular (i.e. every gear revolution), or irregular?

What a bastard. you may learn not to drive too hard, been there done that and paid the price

I remeber Paul and I were thinking that it could be a transfer issue, but that answers the question why it wouldn't drive on it's own. You may have damaged the center diff in the T/case, because if you're not getting drive from any gear forward or back, that would be a possibility.

Worth a look and the g/box transfer has to come out anyway woerse case scenario.

see though that's the confusing bit!

that's the bit that has us stuffed trav.
when they replaced the rear axles & flanges it drove happily on the rear & only occasionaly makes the noises from the front!
this is why we're confused. if it was a transfercase planetry gear problem it shouldn't move either end.
but it drives ok on the rear diff.
i'm wondering if it's the reverse idler gear on the side of the transfer case or maybe a CV on the front axle? only thing is there's no vibration from the wheels.
    I"M SO CONFUSED!!!
