buggered expansion tank cap.?
when was the thermostat last replaced?
may be sticking, restricting proper water flow, causing the hot running and if the cap is faulty the expansion tank might not be "expanding"?
cheers phil
This is a curly one, coming back from Dingo Dell the car was going great, about 20mins from home i got a loss of power, so looked at the temp gauge it was going up to high so i pulled over.
After i stopped i let the car idle for a while and noticed that the temp gauge started to drop, i thought that maybe this could be a air lock in the system, popped the bonnet and undid the air bleed screw and nothing, no water/coolent at all, so i opened the tank, soon as i did that coolent came gushing out of the bleed screw.
I topped up the coolent opened the beed screw again and let it idle for a couple of minutes, little air bubbles were coming out as it was idling, not great amount of fluid while happened, so put the bleed screw back and tightened it up and went on our way, car was going great and no more overheating.
What would cause an air lock, especially since i've already got rid of an airlock a few months ago and until now it's been fine.
I've had it tested for exhaust gases recently and it's all good.
Baz.

I will start by saying Yes you could have done some serious damage......BUT do all the tests first. I say do the tests because my GU was getting bubbles in the coolant about a year ago....all the experts were saying head gasket or head (I can understand that as it was showing classic symptoms of a dud head). BUT when I explained that it had been doing it for around 40000kms they still insisted on pulling the head for a better look. In the end West End diesel in sydney took the time to do all possible tests for me, Pressure test, leak down test, co2 test ect before going to the expense of pulling the head off, sure the testing cost me around $300 BUT it saved me around $2000 cause it wasn't the head at all.
Under load the plastic header tank opened up a little around the seam let some coolant out, then sucked some air in, when the car cooled down the air was trapped in the system apearing as bubbles in the coolant.
So maybe do some tests first thats all I am saying
Might be worth checking

it might also be the heater core taking coolant back in if youve draned it properlyduring a service. its a bugger to get to play the game in a deefer. but I wouldnt have expected it to take 4 months to sort itself.
the shop that did the testing did they use a petrol combustion gas sniffer or a diesel.
diesel ones will give an iffy reading on petrol and petrol ones generally wont even register if sniffing a diesel engine.
the hi falutent routing of the td5 cooling system makes it hard but not impossable to check the expansion tank for bubbling try running it at high idle while using a mirror on a stick to eyeball the inside of the expansion tank.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
In case you're not aware, to properly fill and bleed the D2's cooling system the expansion tank must be removed from its bracket and raised.

i have a vacume coolant system filler, it will show by loss of vacume if there is a leak, if not it will fill the system with out air.
its here and all it needs is a compressor.
cheers phil
