    TD5 Turbo Squeal not whistle?

    '99 Manual TD5 D2 with 160,000ks on the clock, BD chipped, straight through exhaust (muffler & resonator removed from standard exhaust).

    Wondering if anyone can tell me why my turbo (I assume it's the turbo anyway) has started to squeal when winding the car up under acceleration? Used to whislte nicely but has now started to sound a bit ordinary and squeal like? Still whistles when at idle.
    1. Turbo bearings perhaps?
    2. Would this account for some loss of power?
    3. Is it okay to drive like this or does this need attention immediately?
    4. Is it an expensive fix?
    5. Any other ideas as to what this might be

    Any comments appreciated

    Exhaust manifold stud failure, causing an exhaust leak. If you do a search of this site, there is loads of info on this problem.

    Definitely the exahaust studs. When mine went I though it was the belt squeeking.

    If you get it done right away you might not need to replace the metal gasket. The longer you leave it the more exhaust and heat gets past the seal and this warps and burns the gasket.

    Thanks Angus....I would expect it to be a simple cheap fix then assuming I have not warped or burnt the gasket? Does sound like a squeeking belt your right.

    if youve got a straight through exhaust dont worry, you'll know when the turbo lets go....

    For your own confidence to check the turbo just drop of the front hose to the intercooler from the turbo and with 1 finger wiggle the little nut that holds the turbine wheel on if it moves a little bit thats ok so long as its not acompanied by any metalic clicking.


    I still think its going to be the exhaust studs tho.
