    Baby seat in a defender

I've read through all the posts in here regarding this, but don't like to admit that I still couldn't make much sense of it all.

I'm selling my troopy to enable fitting a baby seat, and hence thought a defender would be the best option for me. Alas, it appears there is problems fitting baby seats to a Defender (110 or 130)!

Can anyone please advise the easiest (and/or cheapest) certified option?

    Regards,
    Ranga

It depends on which state you are in. If you fill in your location it would help.

There are two options (assuming a 110 wagon - 130 dual cab is more problematical):-

    1. A cross bar that is bolted to the steel capping each side behind the rear seat.

    2. A braced vertical post bolted to the floor behind the rear seat.

In NSW you need to see a certified child restraint fitting station. As I said, if you give your location, then someone can suggest one somewhere near you. I would not recommend the one I used! (and in any case that was six years ago)

I think it depends on what state you are in. I have a 130 in Vic and we have a baby seat in the centre in the back, our baby is 3 months old (yesterday) so the seat is a "convertable" one that can face either way depending on how old the baby is. at the moment it's facing to the back ad fits really well, but it wouldn't fit on either side as it is too long and the front seats would have to be too far forward to make them usable if it was mounted on either side. all the fitter did was put an approved bolt with a nut and large washer through the rear panel with a special hook on it so that the bolt goes through the double thickness below the panel stiffener across the back.
Just a bit of advice with seats too, I would try to hire a capsule from your local council etc or buy a convertable type seat as at 3 months she is already close to being too big for the capsule, but fits well in the seat. Our capsule hire was $60 for as long as we need it, we just bought a new sheepskin liner for it.

    just my 2c!

Try Streetwise at Eagle Farm or Vanquip in Mansfield, But beware the Can't do anything with 'Aluminium' (Heathens!) attitude.

    Howdy,

We got the anchor points installed at Auto Extra's 3252 3809 which is at Herston right beside the RBH. All certified blue plate and all. Very good very easy. Total bill $352inc.

We have a 07 Defender with 3 baby seats For us they put the three anchors on the deck behind the seats, I believe he felt he could do this because of the uprated new seats in the 07. I have a friend with a older 110 and they installed a load bar behind the seats from the same mob.

    Cheers,

As John says, fitting anchor points to a 110 is pretty straightforward. It is a lot more difficult for a 130 or single cab 110/130.

I'd recommend NOT installing a baseplate in any aluminium bodysheet. I couldn't find any child restraint fitter or approved automotive engineer that would accept that as a solution.

The bar I made up cost less than $50 and although not certified - there isn't a 10cm gap between the rear of the seat and the bulkhead - it was designed and inspected by an automotive engineer.

I ran the seats rear-facing when the twins were little. I've also run three seats across, which is hell to get in and out.

The bar also acts as a stiffener and removed some of the mystery rattles.

    Cheers

Hi Simon, Looks tidy. What are the dimensions of the bar wall thickness, tube size? Length obviously i can work out of mine.

    Cheers Jim

I have a 300Tdi 5 seater defender, I got it from my brother-in-law. He claimed that his kids would kick the back of the drivers seat and drive him nuts. I suspect that the defender was not sexy enough for his wife.
