Leaky water sensor.
Just got back from Landcruiser park. The day was going great untill I did a creek crossing and got out to check the tyres for chipping after they got a clean down from the water.
Got to the fuel filter side tyre then smelt the sweet smell of diesel. First thought was a cracked fuel tank, but then I saw a constant stream of fuel coming from the filter. I thought I snapped a fuel line as the whole thing was covered in mud. A quick wash down showed the diesel coming from the bottom.
The rubber washer that sits in the bottom of the sensor cracked and ejected half of itself to the trail.
The fix was some spare coolant hose that was in with my spares.
Cut like this

It's the perfect ID for the thread on the sensor and the thickness of the rubber fills the chamfer of the filter nicely.
After I put it back together, I chicken tracked it back to the office to sign out and get home ASAP. Having looked at the seal now that I'm home, It has started to delaminate already, So it seems 100km's is pushing the limits of fuel in coolant hose.
I hope you can just buy new washers rather than having to buy the whole new sensor.

Hi
I recently had my "New" type sensor fail on a bush track. see my post
TD5 Fuel Filter Drain Plug Failure
The best remedy for these drain plugs is a stainless M10 x 16 bolt, and use the rubber washer from your new drain plug.
The last of the D2's didn't actually have a water sensor, they used that plastic drain plug. There have been a few failures.
