    Clutch replacement - TD5

Going to look at a 2000 Defender 130 on the weekend, with an intention to buy. The seller told me the clutch is slipping (still very driveable) and needs replacing, hence he's dropped the price by $3k.

Should $2k-$3k cover the cost, and is this something to be worried about?

Had the complete clutch assembly and rear crankshaft seal renewed resently for $2300 on my 130 so the $3k should cover it

Got mine done for $1900 including new fly wheel and clutch pack. So yeah $3k is enough. Depends whether thats just the issue....

I have a very good mechanic, Glenn from Rover Land.

I shopped around a lot and went back to him with the lower prices. He honoured the price and knocked off $100. He basically did not make any money on the deal but was prepared to do it as I put a lot of money his way and he wanted to keep his good customers.

I dont think the price would be available for others. I managed to source a on special cheap clutch kit from Karcraft which was a fly wheel and clutch pack for $1200 rather than $2200.

    Cheers

I was a bit concerned that this may be the tip of the iceberg. Is this a normal issue for a vehicle with ~200,000kms on the clock, or should I be concerned about other things?

a clutch going at 200k Km isnt unheard of and the only thing to be super cautions about is the flywheel, that puppy aint cheap. but if you can get it to me or work it into my schedule Im happy to throw the MK I's at it.

How good are you with the spanners??
Changing out a clutch is not that hard. More time consuming than anything. Hardest part is either getting the motor or box out to do it. A clutch kit should only cost you $400-$600.
