Won't start till third turn of the key.

2000 D2 TD5 Auto. Trying to start in the morning and after work turning the key I hear a "click", trying again I hear it, on the third attempt the engine starts. When it does start the starter motor does not sound like it is laboring as it would with low battery voltage.

On the second attempt I normally look at the warning lights on the dash that illuminate on start up and they dim considerably like the battery voltage IS low.

If I turn the engine off and start it a short time afterwards it starts first go like nothing is wrong.

Could it be the battery voltage is a bit low but the first two attempts to start get the chemical reaction in the battery going which brings the voltage up enough to get the engine started?

The truck recently had to ford water about .6 m deep to get home, (we've had a bit of rain up here) and the problem started after that. I thought maybe some connections somewhere might have got a bit of damp in them, does this sound feasible?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

    crl

Did some fault finding this morning. I turned the lights on for several seconds and then off again prior to turning the key to test the "getting the chemical reaction going" theory and the engine turned over first go.

I think I may be on the right track here, could the water crossing be a coincidence and not a cause?

I'd be leaning toward earth points - if one of them on the chassis gets wet or dirty, resistance goes up and power available is reduced - easily fixed with some steel wool and a dab of grease (or whatever you use to protect electrical joints).

At least if you clean up your negative leads at various points on the chassis you'll have eliminated one possible cause.

    Nice.

Where do I find them? I presume they are just a piece of electrical wire screwed to the chassis. Any particular colour they should be? I know they're green around the home but this is obviously a bit different.

if it is an earth....its likely to be the main one.......

follow the -ve terminal from the battery to the engine block and see if anything is corroded or loose......

There should be an earth lead (usually black and thick) from the engine to the body as well as the chassis, Regards Frank.

All the earth points/loom connections are on the RAVE disc,I saw some pics a while ago.
Check/clean the trigger wire on the starter motor.Mine does what you discribe after mud/wet gravel roads.
Easy to find, just above the front propshaft.
    GOODLUCK
