Technical - Airbags and Sacrificial Plates on Bullbars
Hey all,
Thinking of putting a bullbar with sacrificial plates on the disco(it has airbags)... is there any legal issues with doing it?
Cheers

Yep. But they are easily overcome. Find similar Disco's with a branded bullbar (ie ARB or other makes) and attach yours in the same manner using same parts. Take photos and tell insurance company the bare facts: You have put bullbar on in approved manner.
The logic of above is born of the many threads on the same topic that have been discussed before. Technically, your Disco is a class MC vehicle ( says so on the Australian Compliance plate) and is exempt from mandatory airbags, even though they are fitted. However, when fitting a bullbar, whatever you do must not interfere with the designs associated with the crash and crumple stuff. That's the simple answer anyway.
So buy a recognized brand of bullbar that the makers specify for 94-98 Disco ( And they come up for sale 2nd hand on a regular basis) and provided it is in OK condition, you're covered - after all, ARB/TJM etc would have worked this all out before production -they'd get sued by now if they weren't complying with the regs.
But adapting the mounts on an older bullbar and making your own sacrifice plates probably won't fly.
Take a tour of some car yards and have a look at some Disco 1 and D2 with bullbars - you'll notice what differences there are between the two, and it will give you a better idea of whats required.
ps: Technical is now out of AULRO general forums and in a section all it's own - you have to click onto 'Australian Land Rover Owners ' in the top left corner, enter the main index and scroll down a bit
