    TD5 problem . . . . . .

Yesterday it ran like a dream, today it has no power. Still runs perfectly, still drives OK just drives like a loaded up 4.2 Landcruiser today !!! There's no smoke, no extra rattles in the motor, just not as much power. No water in the oil, it hasn't run dry, oil still clean, but there was a lot of heat coming from the engine bay with the bonnet lifted, but can't say it was any hotter than usual. Today was 36 degrees but that shouldn't be a problem. Guessing it's lost about 30% of it's power but it can still get to 60 OK, just slower. I decided it was OK to drive home since there was water, oil and no extra noises and it was only 10 mins away when I noticed it.

It did sound like the fan was "woooshing" more than usual when you rev it, and when driving up the street it did sound like it had a few extra fans blowing air rather than just 1.

Any ideas anyone ?? Who's the best mechanics in Brisbane for TD5's ???

Thanks to Dobbo for pm'ing me on another forum and suggesting I come here. He gave me a link which I read through and it's sounds like the modulator valve. Today's it's running better, but not quite 100 %

    Thanks in advance !!

Run the engine with the Climate control off,is the electric fan in front of the radiator running????
If so the motor has been overheated enough to have the ECU protect the motor.
To stop the fan running the fault code needs to be cleared.
There are other things to check, turbo wastgate valve, intercooler hoses and oil at the ECU.
There is a seperate area with all the TD5 engine issues I will find it and add a link.

    Thanks for the reply !!

I found that series of threads great reading so thanks, it's the same link that was pm'd to me that brought me here to ask. I did actually go looking for a 'mechanical' or 'engine' forum but couldn't find one in the general forums list so thought General Chat must be where it belongs.

Seems to be driving well today still, I do think it's down on power a bit, it just seems a little reluctant to rev and doesn't have the punch off the line it had.

Just have to find me a good TD5 mechanic now.

check your EGR, depending on how good you are on the spanners will decide how far you can go to check that but to start with just drop the intercooler pipe off of the front of it (its on the drivers side front of the engine) and give the valve bodies a bit of a tap with a plastic screwdriver handle, Removing the 2 vac pipes and sealing them might also help at this point and will definately prove the problem one way or another.

If your keen and patient you can give the inside a hit with carby clean while its still on the engine but FFS DO NOT start the engine untill its all evaporated and you have the pipe work back in place.

IF that makes a significant difference youve found the main culprit and the next thing to look at will be the condition of your intercooler hosing.

    TD5 Power Down

I had a really strange one with my TD5. The internals of the centre muffler collapsed rstricting the exhaust flow, especially when it was hot. This in turn cuts the turbo pressure way down resulting in lack of power. No smoke out the back, no strange noises, every thing looks OK until you put a boost gauge on the system and max boost up was 8 PSI. On a 2.5 litre deisel 8 PSI is next to useless.

Any lack of Turbo boost on such a small capacity engine in a large heavy body will be very noticable. Hence the split Turbo air hoses, EGR stuck open and poor boost badly affect power.

seems to be a few of us suffering lately with these symptoms.. they are still apparent on mine also although slightly better with a replaced wastegate modulator, egr valve and other sensors to be checked soon...

unfortunately on mine its still intermittent.. but i'd be betting on egr valve now.. blanking kit coming up.. oh im also hoping the nanocom may help to pinpoint something also...

    Thanks

It sounds as if the viscous fan coupling has seized up. The giveaway sign is the increased air noise from the fan and lack of power. With the engine off try turning the fan by hand.

I'll give the fan a test tomorrow, so thanks for the reply. Today I took a run from the city to Springwood and the drop in power is definately noticable at 110k'h. It just doesn't want to overtake. Up to 60k/h it's OK, not good, not a shocker but at 110 it doesn't want to know about it if you put your foot down.

My gut feeling is turbo boost for whatever reason, you can't feel the turbo kick in any more, it's just smooth continuous albeit slow acceleration.

Sounds like MR at Redcliffe is the place to take it ?? I need to buy myself one of those little units that plug in the computer !!! Anyone want to sell one ??

You also could have blown a hole in a turbo hose
