    Suspension query.....D2

    G'day all,
Just returned from a highly enjoyable weekend trip into the Vic High Country, first time i've been able to give the Disco a good workout since upgrading the suspension, tyres etc.
I'm now running 32" BFG Muds and they are great, much better ride on and offroad compared to my other set of 29" tyres.
I had some traction issues coming up the "Barkly River Jeep Track" on Mt Skene where at one point, climing some rough rock steps i continually got stuck at the same point where a mate in his GU Patrol had no issues. My problem stemmed from the fact that my disco kept lifting the front left wheel just as the rear right hit a ledge and spun, resulting in no go I tried various speeds, gears and angles of attack eventually getting through after at one stage lifting the front wheel again almost a metre off the ground A bit hair-raising considering the nature of the track.
My D2 has cdl, new lovells front springs and new lovells shocks all round with SLS airbags in the rear. Is the "wheel lifting" as a result of the airbags not flexing as well as the Patrols coils were? Any advice from all you suspension Guru's would be great.

The rest of the trip i had no issues at all, handled steep clay and shale accents and decents perfectly, just the one problem on the rock steps, where the patrol cruised through Patrol has 33" Pro Comp Muds with an OME 2" lift.

Sounds like you where crossed axled with no momentum. The Patrol probably has LSD in the rear giving better forward motion.
Also is the wheelbase on the Patrol longer that your D2 giving different drive characteristics. I have airbags in the rear of the Defender and till I fixed the shock travel could dislocate the rear springs.

I'd have thought Traction Control would take care of any cross-axling.

The difference in wheel base is all it can be sometimes. The nissan is a bit longer,so he may not have been cross axling when you did.

You can imagine my panic when he sugested getting the snatch strap out
There was no way i was going to allow that, it took about 15 minutes of trying differant approaches and a few mm of rubber gone but i got through
Would love a rear locker, finance won't allow at the mo, got a wedding coming up in May

    one possibility - SLS system...
Air bellows by nature will allow better travel than a coil HOWEVER the L (leveling) smarts will try to stop it. The SLS trys to keep the two rear corners at the standard ride height - rear of car parallel to rear axle no mater what the axle is doing, and will react quite quickly when the corner is lifting (dump air preasure to bring the wheel back to the body - it won't lift the wheel but it won't carry any weight)

This is why the D3 and RRS have a cross link system built in to the EAS to allow air to transfer from side to side allowing a wheel to disapear into the guard while the other side has full preasure while stretched out high (am I making any sense)

This is along the lines of what i was thinking? Do others with SLS in their D2's have similar characteristics on rough terrain?

My thoughts to. For that type of event to be occuring it'll be the wheelbase that is making the difference. Likewise, the Disco will walk through other stuff that stumps the Patrol.
    Cheers

I previously owned a '95 300TDi D1. In 1997 for fun I fitted the air suspension that was offered as an option on the later european D1s (basically the same as RRC vogue) - BUT I used mechanical height sensors (no computer) and set up cross links through electrically operated valves. That car never lifted a wheel, it's really a pity I had so much trouble with the transmision and in the end it had to go.
Without the D2 (or RRC) SLS smarts an air system will eat coil for travel - when the spring expands it can still suport the full weight even at full stretch - just make sure your shocks can stop it going too far (some scanias actually have chains for this purpose).
As you might have guessed I do have this problem - get out and look at the distance from tyre to guard on both rear wheels, what we need is some way of disabling the height sensor, maybe intercept and substitute the signal from the wheel sensor....
