Dougal, Filler plugs are not Forged or rolled high tensile steel that have been designed to withstand enormous amounts of torque like a 6 point headed Bolt.
Filler plugs are cast iron and compared to a high tensile bolt or nut they are soft as butter. That's why they have 4 large flat sides, so as you can get a shifter, spanner or stilsons on for better grip, I would like a dollar for every rounded off drain or filling plug that has been rounded off by someone using a Socket. A Socket that was designed to work correctly on a 6 or 12 point bolt head or nut. So the day will come when you round off a (soft) plug that is tighter than you have experienced so far, and you won't be able to get a shifter or spanner on until you file off the damaged (now raised up higher than the flats) corners, to each his own, but the correct way is to use a shifter or a wide (thick) jaw spanner, Regards Frank.

They are 1/2" square. Use your 1/2" square socket set bars or ratchet.

Muppet wrench is the act of overtorquing, stripping and rounding out bolts. Common expression here, but obviously not in Aussie.
Basically it's what happens when you let a muppet near a set of tools.

It's not referring to a crescent (shifter).

Known here as a Kiwi spanner. Irish spanner is a large hammer.

When I was living in Sydney it was a "shifter". Can't call it a crescent because "Crescent" is a brand name.
    So what about "Esky" then?
