Brakes on D1 - can anyone lock their tyres up at 60kph

Hi all - my 95 D1 (non-abs) from when I first got it 5 years ago has always had its brakes properly looked after, but never on a dry road at 60kph with good 30 inch tyres on have I been able to lock the tyres at 60kph - even with max leg pressure. Stops quickly but no lock up. My 02 Disco has got more powerful brakes - they upped rotor size and vac assistance from memory and even it does not like to lock up on a dry road at 60- I havent tried the 02 for a while but from memory it wont trip the ABS at that speed - only really stomping on them in the wet!

Anyone else noticed this...are just so heavy that they dont like locking, combined with brakes that are a tad less aggressive than that might (ought) to be...? I drove a NS pajer... recently as a loaner and it could lock the wheels (well activate the ABS anyway) at 60 with no real dramas.

    Cheers

I'd be taking it to a reputable brake place as mine with the crap brakes it has on it at the moment still locks up at 100kms if I want it too.

They have very large powerful brakes for the size of vehical so maybe you have a vac leak or something that is stopping your booster from working.

Thanks matey - I reckon that they are more prone to lock up at higher speed though...have you ever tried at 60 or even 80?

Bolt some defender brakes with 46mm pistons on. About 25% more clamping force than what you've got now.

Thanks Dougal - might just do that...but in the meantime is my truck normal compared to other non-abs D1s?

I have locked up (well, had the ABS working) at 60 on a '96 Disco, and I have a vacuum leak! They stop very fast when you brake that hard.

Edit: Roundabout where Centenary hwy joins Ipswich motorway/parking lot.

    Nope - not at 60.
Mine stops well, but doesn;t lock them up.
I do have the bigger calipers sitting in the shed waiting though
