The difference in viscosity will make no significant difference, possibly slightly noisier. The modern EP oils however, are corrosive to the copper alloy bits in Series gearboxes, but I don't know how serious the problem is.

Hi all , no more reports on the radiator, I had to re build the gearbox.
I had a spare gearbox on the shelf that I had to rebuild and swap into my
11a wich has lost second gear.
Rebuilding a gearbox is quite a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Conversley, removing the broken one from the vehicle was a dirty frustating job.
Anyway all that is over and my 11a now has a nice smooth tight gearbox installed.
I read in the workshop manual that the gear box takes 1.5 litres of oil and the transfer takes 2.5 litres. went down to Coventries bought some gearbox oil and filled them up.
Now, I had not noticed that the Manual says EP90 oil.
Looking at the container I have filled up with EP80 !!!
Not that there was much choice to purchase.
Have I committed a mortal sin, or is EP80 OK to use ?
Im not sure if that is a silly question, but after all that work I don't want to ruin it by driving around with the wrong oil.
any advice will be greatley appreciated.

Have to agree with John D here, the modern oil may be a problem in your gearbox over the long term. The sulfurs in the oil can affect the 2nd/3rd mainshaft bush, the synchromesh cones and the reverse idler shaft bearings.
I use Penrite Mild EP in my gearbox - you could always use the EP80 in the swivels or the diff housings where there are no yellow metal parts.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Very interesting reads on copper passivatation, and the transformer industries to be found on the net
But closer to home, I don't think Penrite Mild is a stock Item at supa crap or other shops of the same ilk.
Does anyone know of a likely source of a vintage style EP90 oil in WA
Would Castrol VMX sufice ?
so long as you dont goto 85/140 youll be fine with just about any oil in a series box from ATF through engine oil from 40/60 gear oil to 80/90.
