I have a 94 D1 on gas which i have had for 10 years. After owning it for a couple another land rover owner came over and asked if I had trouble with backfireing and he told me to run colder plugs which I did a now have no problems backfiring while driving.

Yep - I run the 6 plug instead of the 5 in NGK Irridiums - very very good plug with very high miles and excellent throttle response on LPG. BUT...if your running out of gas and stomp on the throttle the shear lean out will usually cause backfire....

Mine will also backfire if it runs out of gas. My gauge also stopped working for a few years and it was fixed at the 10 year inspection. After the red light comes on I can go another 50- 80K. If I can pick it up there is a whistling noise at the rear, not sure if it is in the tank or the exhaust but when you hear it there is not much time to change to petrol. I usually change over 50K after the light comes on.

Good move Pete - the whistling is the LPG coming out of the tank when almost empty. In my 95 I cant hear it normally - tanks under vehicle, but in my 02 the 3 scuba tanks are in the load area and I can clearly hear it.

    Cheers

One thing for sure - a vapour sequential injected LPG system doesn't suffer from backfiring.

Mine can be run till the tank completely empties (loud whistling ceases). No backfiring at all.

You used to hear the scuba in the back of mine whistling until I encased it into a wooden box now it's quite muffled.

No backfiring when it runs out though, just starts to die in performance, usually on an up hill run. You hit the switch and the injectors open, then off and away.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
