    harmonic balancer for 200 tdi

    Hi guys,
Have read the posts on "balancers",but cant find one on my particular problem.
Have been able to get the nut off,but the balancer wont budge.
Have used all the usual tools, plus a little help from a machine operated tools.
    Still wont budge.
    Any ideas please...

When we did my daughter's 300Tdi, we had hell's own trouble getting it off. In the end we had to use an oxy and had to buy a new harmonic balancer.

Someone had centre popped all around the crankshaft nose to expand it slightly and then Loctited the pulley on.

If your in Melbourne I can lend you the appropriate puller to do the job.
A little heat can help if its been loctited.

Gee, I'll bet the name above their workshop door read "Dodgy Bros.", Regards Frank.

    HI Tank,
The mechanic shop that is doing the work are far from the term "Dodgy Bros" .

I trust these guys more than I do the local privately run Landy workshop, and they dont charge the earth to get the job done.

The simple fact of the matter is that the balancer WONT come off.
Its either been loctited on,or its never been off in the 260K's that its travelled.

I'll get off my high horse now and return to my usual quiet self.

now that does make it fairly difficult

usually, a spot of heat on the bolt softens the locktite and if you make or borrow the appropriate 4 stud (8mm stud threads, abt 44mm square pattern from memory) puller and if no-one has formerly stuffed it up with punches and chisels, then it should come off ok...

    regards, Laurie

I was referring to Ron's (p38arover) post, as whoever fitted the balancer to Ron's daughters TDi was certainly "Dodgy", Regards Frank.

    update

My mechanic finally got it off the crank. It had on[B]rusted on[B].

Am now in the process of getting a new balancer.

    Questions....
a, How could a supposedly sealed section of engine become rusty.(I thought of drowning the engine at some stage in its life. But then it shouldnt run.)

b,Has anyone else experienced this particular problem with the 200tdi when changing the timing belt..

    Thanks guys
