    CV's

    Hey guys,
just need some quick advice. I am replacing the front diff in my 93 200tDi Defender with an ARB unit. Axles are being replaced by the Maxi-Drive type units. It has been suggested to me to replace the CV's with the old County versions. However adding that cost on, along with the cost of converting them to fit adds up to around $597.30.

Now I don't know about you guys, but this is money I could really do with in my pocket. The current CV's are in a good state with nothing wrong with them. Is it necessary to replace them, or is it something that is generally done if you're going to do a heap of rock crawling.

I don't want to get up to say the Cape and have the CV's go bang on me, but it is also starting to approach to much money in one hit. Some advice would be appreciated.

    Thankyou
    Chris

You could just buy a couple of those cheapies that come up on ebay for $60 or $70 and put them in the kit just in case. Might not be up there in the same league as your locker and axles, but they'll surely get you out of trouble.

    Cheers

Yes, carry a cheapie spare. They are only 3kg. My thoughts are that with standard tyres and sensible driving you will be fine.
Its the weakest link in the setup, but still pretty capable.

Its not critical to replace them but if your going to be using it hard enough to take advantage of all the other upgrading youve done it makes sense to do them.

If you have your front diff (ARB Locker) locked in while climbing a difficult track and you need to turn a corner disengage the front locker first, it will take a lot of strain off your Cv's because the locked diff will do it's best to push you straight ahead.
I have Maxi axles and flanges, and ARB lockers front and rear and I have 110 CV's and haven't had a problem, Regards Frank.

I think you may have to change your cvs if you are going to maxi axles. Count the number of splines on your new maxi axles, 1 end should have 24 splines (diff) the other should have 23 (cv). The problem is that Defenders have a 32 spline cv and 110 countys (and stage 1 series 3s) have the bigger 23 spliners.
I dont think maxi do a 24/32 axle, so you are stuck with either standard axles or maxi axles+county cvs.

    G'day Chris

    above x2.

What tyres are you running these days. Anything grippier than those you used to have would load up the CVs - and everything else. Put the good ones in or carry spares.

Where are you getting County CV's for $500 a pair...
They are now no longer avail New Genuine....

Only after market and Used... and the aftermarket are weaker than the 24 spline Disco ones...

Getting the AEU2522 CV's from Rover Parts. They have them listed at $217.80.

They might not be as strong as some of the others out there, but I figured that they are better than what I have.

    Hey Max,
I'm running 235/85 R16 Hankook Muddies. I didn't want to change rims etc, as I wanted to keep the touring side more prevalent than the playing side. I found that running this size worked with the current rims, but it is simply a case of adjusting the steering stops out a little to stop them rubbing. One day I'll convince the wife for a 4" lift

I might look at carrying some spares, or changing in the near future. I was doing some adding up, and with the ARB lockers front and rear, the axles and a couple of other important things like the cargo barrier, I'm spending 5k just on parts this time - starting to get expensive again.

I'll just have to be careful when I use the front locker

    Yeah right!

    Cheers
    Chris

P.S - I do agree with you and Dave, just funding limiting me at the moment. I certainly prefer to make things bulletproof, hence why I followed you example and went the rock crawling low range gears when they crapped themselves.

BTW - Michelle is still blaming you for all of my ideas of modifying the old girl everytime something goes bang!
