    Removing SRS from Disco 1

To my learned colleagues. Does anybody know if the SRS airbag can be removed permanently from a series 1 discovery?

I only have the drivers side airbag, no passenger side. If the srs airbag can be disconnected and removed, then I can fit a tube bar to the front of the car as well, rather than the huge protruding ARB or TJM offerings.

    Regards

    Goldey

when considering doing this you may want to check with your insurance company as it may void any claim you may have in the future !
dont forget that airbags are a safety component !

I agree it is a safety component, but after surviving the daily commute for many years aboard a motorbike, my biggest safety component is between my ears and I wouldn't necessarily grieve the airbag disappearing.

But good point about the insurance company. Will follow them up today.

    Cheers

    Re: SRS

My understanding is that SRS when fitted is a roadworthy requirement and cannot be removed legally.

Yep very true if it's fitted standard it must work and can't be removed.

I asked Qld Transport (the actual inspector guys at the government inspection stations) and they said it is fine to remove the SRS airbags from a Disco1. I assume it is okay as the Disco1 had airbags as an option. The lower spec models passed ADRs without the airbags.
I ended up finding a Disco1 without airbags anyway so I didn't need to remove them.

I would verify anything you do with your local rta. My understanding of the law is if it was sold with it it must be retained and keep to manufaturers standard. Be careful becausethis sort of mod may get you a red sticker.

This is my understanding as well, you can also remove ABS under the same pretext. On a D2 where airbag is standard is another matter.

No doubt it changes state to state but my understanding is that you can fit and remove optional equipment. Which ABS and airbags were on a Disco1.

I mean removal and not disconnection. Removing of every part and returning the vehicle to standard spec.

A friend of mine had his commodore knocked back on a roadworthy many years ago because his air con didn't work. He was told to fix it or remove it entirely. Not a safety issue but optional equipment still.

Thanks for the reply's and assistance all.

For those of us residing in NSW, I am chasing the technical branch of the RTA for an "in writing" ruling on the issue. My interest lies in removing the airbag so as to be able to install a non-airbag compliant bullbar.

Will let you know how I go.

    Cheers
