    Response from KAM in England

This is the response from KAM in England to an email I sent them asking these questions about their range of diff locks, upgraded shafts, CV's etc.

I am considering their diff lock as an alternative to ARB and wanted to find out more about their support, reliability, future plans in Aus, etc. This is what they had to say:

Are your diff locks, shafts, CV upgrades etc compatible with the 2003 Discovery 2 TD5?

    Yes

You don’t seem to have a distributor here in Australia. Do you send many diff locks, and CV’s etc here?

    Yes

Do you intend to operate an Australian distributorship?

Yes. This under negotiation and should be completed by the middle to third quarter of the year.

Do KAM products offer performance guarantees and/or warranties?
Yes. Basically it is year on workmanship and quality.

Do you have any reliability information?
There are 4000 Spanish military PS10 vehicles fitted with the KAM diff locker. There has not been one failure of the diff lock or LSD system.
KAM have a similar number of lockers out with private individuals and there have been no failures with the locker or LSD system.
In 2 years KAM have only replaced 2 half shafts.
The CV conversion has a 99% reliability record.
The crown wheel and pinion we manufacture have a 99% reliability record.
KAM are OEM to the Spanish military and the Australian DF.
KAM is on ‘test’ with the British MoD.
KAM have no issues with their product range.

What after-sales service could or do you offer to your customers overseas, and in particular, Sydney, Australia?

We can ship and get products to you with in 5 days, normally 3.
KAM can be contacted at any time and as the time difference is only 11 hours for phoning, we are easily contactable.
KAM are here to help and want to help.

I could not find any customer or trade reviews of your diff locks, even on Google. Could you provide information on available reviews of KAM diff locks, shafts, etc?

    Ed I will reviews later.

Are your diff guards/rock sliders available yet?

Not currently, but they will be developed at some stage.

What would be the delivery timeframe from date of order to Sydney, Australia?

    About 7 days.

The website states that you are testing a bonding compound for the mounting ring instead of welding. What is your current method/recommendation?

Welding is the current way to attach the mounting ring. Again we have had no issues with this method as regards the axle tubes.

What diff ratio change would you recommend if I change permanently from standard to 32” tyres (235/85/R16), to compensate for the larger diameter? i.e. correct the Speedo/power
Do you provide low range replacement gears?

I would recommend the 4.75 ratio. Excellent off road gear. It reduces the gearing by 25.47%, (based on the standard Land Rover 3.54 ratio), and has a strength increase in the tooth form of 50%

Can I confirm the correct parts to order by providing vehicle details, VIN, etc?

    Yes, no problem at all.

I expect a key factor in the cost to me would be the shipping charges. Please detail any options for shipping.

I have quoted for shipping with FedEx and this is good for a month from today’s date.
A number of overseas customers organise their own shipping as it is cheaper than anything I can offer. The choice is yours.

Please contact me if I can help further.

    Andrew Reid

Do the ADF use upgraded components? If so are they KAM?

I doubt very much that the diff gears are 50% stronger when operating in comparison to a 3.54. I would go so far as to say that I'd bet that the combination of CW/P is weaker, even if the "tooth" presumably on the CW is 50% stronger than standard - if not a standard 4.7 series CW..

32" tyres from 29" equate to a diff gear change of less than a 4.11, let alone a 4.75!!!

I cant resist posting on this...

I had a set of KAM axles in my disco and the fronts twisted and snapped the first time I went out. 33" tyres 3.5lt low range first

I wanted my money back some $1500 nearly 8 years ago now and was told sorry no way

So Im not suprised they have only replaced two half shafts. Thats because they dont replace them FOC

    not here anyway

I then "upgraded" to factory 24/32 spline axles and didnt have the same problems

I then discovered maxi drive and havent gone back 400hp gen 3 with 33's double diff lock, rear salsbury and no dramas for the last 4 years

kam dosent have the best reputation in oz

i dont know what they are supplying to the Aus df, i would ask them this, as Maxidrive have been suppling for years and now hi-torque engineering is doing axles for them(new maxidrive axle and flanges)

there difflock is over complicated... shipping will kill you on cost

onestly find one of the last maxidrives or by arb and get hi torque engineering axles or go jacmac.... support australian its all better than kam anyway

Thats most definately a message that ARB need to hear.

Why is it, that its cheaper to pay for international freight twice! than to buy the locker locally. They certainly can't blame the dollar and 10% doesn't make up the difference.

hmmm, good question Serg. I had assumed that all manufacture of the lockers was done in Melbourne, but...

And you are guaranteed to get any part you need IF a ARB Locker gives you any dramas in AUS
