TD5 into Disco 1

Defenders don't have most of this rubbish So why would I have to sort it out for a D1? and forgive my dumbness but what is SLABs and BCU. Speedo runs from gear box so no hassle as I want to keep this and even though my car has SRS it is not linked to the motor.

If you can put a big chunk of cast iron V8 under the bonet why not a Landie up date motor? Besides the V8 would be to heavy and again not a lot of power for the out lay (again quote from the mob in Gympie $20k "maybe more" his words)

I am thinking of the Intercooler and exhaust, hummed and hared over the LPG but I haven't really thought about the turbo. But add these up and it is a lot of money for a small increase in power.

Utemad, you are correct about the lockers, but you know my car and a D2 would cost alot to get to where I currently am. As for the 130, sure I buy it and then I put in one of Jessies V8's he has 5 to choose from:D

I understand your pain. Your car has everything you would want in an offroader except the power to comfortably tow your camper.

Just a thought though. Considering the state of your auto, do you think you would be losing more power through it than you would if it was in good nic?

If you do decide to ditch it for a later model D2 though. Remember me when you sell your sliders and one of your difflocks :thumbsup:

SLABS is a computer in the Disco 2 that controls the self levelling suspension and the ABS systems in a nutshell. It's an important one in the Disco as it all feeds a lot of other systems as it also generates the speed signal to the vehicle. I doubt very much the non-ABS defender TD5's had anything like this.

BCU is the body control computer, that makes the body work. Again, I don't think the Defender had this.

Without really knowing, I would have thought that a TD5 Defender without ABS would be a straight forward conversion. There are some differences between the TD5 auto and the TDi auto, but George130 has demo'd that the Tdi auto and TD5 will go together. In the conversion, don't forget all of the stupid little things that are not usually thought about, like exhaust plumbing,
radiators, hoses and shrouds,
hose conversions to the engine pumps for a/c, PAS etc,
Ignition switches to match the TD5,
engine mounts
electronic pedal cluster
heater pipe outlets,
fitment of frontal body work like the grill and bonnet to suit
Obstructing crossmembers
Integrating the wiring looms etc etc etc.

These are the things that I found when doing a V8 conversion on my IIa.

what about the speedo?

Been done a few times here in Adelaide....

Use Defender ECU... And loom to make it happen.

The speedo can operate normally with cable drive.

Thanks for the heads up on SLABs and BCU, neither of these are in the D1.

Looks like the way to go is to find a wrecked Defender and get the front off it.

The auto might be the same as the V8 to TDi, same box just different bell housing, input shaft and shift points, some work but as my box needs a rebuild then I have to fork out for it anyway

Their is a white rolled (crushed roof) Defender 110 Extreme in someone's front yard in Goodna. Looks reasonably new. Saw it on last Friday afternoon

It would have traction control and ABS I would imagine though so don't know if it would be appropriate or not.

Could you use the complete Td5, R380 and LT230 from a Defender and then just bolt that in without needing to modify tailshafts?
Could be a good way to go so you can then get it going and worry about the auto conversion later. Small steps if you know what I mean.

More work in using the R380 than gettting the ZF sorted, the ZF is in and fitted remember

They fit and you can get the bellhousings from the factory, what more do you need to start a conversion, found a motor yet?:D
