    Will a 4.6 Crank go in a 3.9 block.

    Hello,

I have a 3.9 due for a rebuild, but have access to a 4.6 crank, rods, and pistons about 120,000klms old and I plan to re-ring and re shell.

I understand bore sizes are same, but will the crank fit the block. Does the 'big journal' refer to mains or both mains and big ends. Will the block need machining? Or should I machine the crank?

    Thanks and appreciate any guidence.

I have used a 4.0 crank stroked with the mains ground down in a 3.5 block. So it should be possible. 4.0 & 4.6 have bigger mains and big ends. It shouldn't be too hard to make it fit.

Thanks Haydofly, So width of mains is same, so no difference for the 4 bolt end caps, just diameter?

Did you have to make any changes to front end of crank?

I have a 1999 DII V8 4.0 which slipped a cylinder liner last Christmas. Since the block needed to be stripped for the cylinder liners to be top hatted, I figured it made more sense to just install a 4.6 crankshaft.

So now my Disco has a little more grunt!

The answer to your question should be a "yes" although I'm sure there are variations to crankshafts, etc.
