    ZF Dip Stick

    Hi All,

I have a 97 TDi with a ZF auto gearbox.

I regularly have to re-seat the gearbox dip stick which seems to work its way out of the pipe guide. Happens more often with extended 4WD use.

The dip stick seats quite firmly in the pipe guide and requires positive pressure to remove it, so it doesn't appear to be a wear problem.

    Anyone else have this problem?

What could it be caused by?

    Should I be concerned?

    Thanx
    Marty

when they fitted a D1 ZF pan to my D2 it used to do exactly the same thing in blowing out the dipstick. I don't think that this is uncommon even though it probably shouldn't do it.

My '97 does it. Fixed by a previous owner with a piece of elastic.

As a related subject, my dipstick breather tube appears to have snapped halfway down (closer to the firewall). The dipstick still works fine, just have to make sure the two outer tubes are butted together.

Can anyone see this causing a problem?

    Cheers

Safe wading depth would be somewhat reduced.

I was chasing problems at the time, and this allowed me to check the fluid levels. The D1 had the dipstick, where the D2 doesn't.
