    Stress cracks in D2's

    Just a quick one, I have been looking to repower or update.

    However on the update front I have looked at two erly D2's both 2000 models and both have had stress fractors on the radiator support panel. There is spot welds there and it seems to stem from them.

    One was really bad as was on both sides, the drivers side was starting to tear under the battery cover and the cracks on the pas side were rusting and the car had a weird virbration (10k for a D2 td5 is cheap so I had to look) This car was used for heavy towing and lots of dirt road work.

    The other car has minor cracking on the drivers side

    Has anyone else seen this before?

    Hi Dan,

    Did either one of these vehicles that you looked at have a bull bar fitted?

    Or are there any tell tale signs that they have been travelling on Outback roads?

    My 1999 V8 DII has these crachs at the radiator support panel too. I personally believe that it was the corrugations on the two Simpson Desert trips that have led to the cracking.

    Also, I believe that the failure of both the body mount bracket under the wheel arch just behind the front wheels contributed to excessive front fender movement which exacerbated the problem. I now have reinforced front body mounts.

    The latter DIIA (facelift) has much beefier looking front body mounts.

    Thanks for that, one of the cars had a bullbar (the worst one) however the other didn't.

    I guess it will be something else to look for when buy one

    I would prefer the D2 update so it might make life easier

    Those cracks are often the first easily visible sign that the chassis is cracking .

    There is a reinforcement plate that is to be welded to the chassis for this if the crack isn't too big.

    Even cars without ever having a bull bar can exhibit the radiator panel cracks if they're had a hard life.
    Sometimes they're not even noticed as a warning label covers up a couple of the spot welds.
