    VDO DAYTON MS5000 is worth installing

    Hi All I have all this to install in my Disco I have had the VDO daytona MS5000 for some time now and I am Ummmn and Ruuuun to if or not I install it

    this unit started life in a Transit then a freelander then a patrol

    the problem is to install this unit its like between $350 and $400 is it worth it, as you can get a top of the range portable for that money

    the other issue is that it must be connected to the speedo and if its electronic it maybe ok if its machanical need to by a modual ???????

    Unless you have the latest maps, then you might as well not waste your money as they will cost quite a bit. The MS5000 was good in it time, about $3000 worth but that was in 2000/2001, but 8 years later it's not as good as the middle of the range units you get for $400, and it needed the on-board gyro etc to keep track due to the poor signals, lack of satellites etc.

    Nowadays, there are multiple GPS satellites and if you use an external aerial, you should have no problem getting enough signal even in forest country. My Navman works well, cost me $400 and had the latest maps when I bought it, (cost $175 to upgrade to new maps) fits in my pocket, and can used any of my cars.

    If you fit it yourself, and have the new maps, then its a bargain, but to pay someone else to fit an 8 year old unit, then buy new maps ( if you still can) and end up paying at least the same as a modern GPS doesn't make sense to me.

    yeah decided not to go there to hard to install on my own $400 to fit as you said new CD $300 there thats $700 thats almost the mallagen x over back in the capboard of which it came out of thanks guys
