what do you want to be able to do on it?

metric 8mm-22mm in double off set bi-hex ring will get you out of most situations with a decent set of pliers, plug socket and screwdriver kit.

a 3/8th inch drive socket set in the same sizes (they usually also incorporate the 1/4 inch drive stuff as well and cover about 5-19mm when all told)

Never mind new spanners - what we all need is arms 3 metres long with at least 4 double joints in each.
Now that would be a LR maintainers utopia!

I got a set of KinCrome ratchet spanners. I highly recomend. I was going to not bother with them, but some sweet talking from my father, and he convinced me, thankfully.

Id just go for 6 - 22mm or there abouts. I was in your shoes a couple of weeks ago. There isnt going to be one kit to fit all really. I settled on 4 - 22mm and the equivalent (or there abouts ) In imperial, socket and spanners sets. 1/4 and 3/8 drive. I got a 3/8 drive torque wrench which is good for 6-110nm. That covered me for my own servicing.

When it comes time to doing suspension etc, Ill either buy a 1/2 drive socket set, or buy things as I need them.

The only thing I had (I thought) to buy was a 32mm socket for the gear box drain plug, but that was pointless as its so close to the prop shaft you cant get it on there when the socket wrech attatched. I just used a big shifter.

Check all your transfer case, gear box and diff plugs. You might need an automotive drain plug set. Kincrome do one ($55) and Blknight.aus tells me SidCrome also do one.

Buying new tools is more fun than buying a Defender... almost

Alan, one tool I would recommend is a 3/8" drive Sidchrome Rotator ratchet $60 to $70 (Bunnings), works like a normal ratchet except when in a tight spot you just ROTATE the handle back and forwards, which rotates the socket, invaluable in tight places where you can only get a few clicks at a time and it takes 1/2 an hour to do up a bolt or nut. With this a few rotations of the handle and it's done up, all you need to do then is tighten with the handle in the normal way, Regards Frank.
