trans vibration at lockup 2001 d2td5

This should get the Landyphiles going!
Ok... The transmision has been rebuilt (by a very reputable LR service company)...... TWICE! and still we have this problem.

The transmission changes fine thru 1,2,3 and 4. It even goes into lockup but if it's under load, it vibrates...and I mean VIBRATES! Revs increase by about 500rpm (which seems to indicate slipping?), back off the pedal and the vibration goes away, accelerate gradually and if I'm lucky, I can get to 100-110 kmh with no problem.

The converter has been taken out, pulled apart and tested...ok.

As already stated, the transmission has been totally rebuilt twice and now is in a different case (just in case there might have been a crack in the original).

The next test appears to be a 'bench test' at a specialist place (at the service org cost) but if the transmission comes up ok, they want to charge me from then on!

Now the out of pocket so far is $3,500(+.... I just paid that as 'contribution to the final account) and that was to my mechanic who I trust implicitely. He is very much on my side here as he arranged the rebuild thru a repuable LR service org.

Fact is, the transmission still has this shudder and now because they don't know what it is, they want an excuse to bill me for the work.... I don't think so!!!!!

Any clues from the Guru's out there?

Might be able to save everyone a lot of acrimony (did I say that word?? ) if I'm able to suggest a cause.

I have purposly not named the company here as they have really proved very good up till now, I just want the problem fixed, I don't really want to damage their business

    Thanks guys!

Was the flex plate checked? These can crack on the rare occasion.

Thanks Slunnie, the only reason this might be discounted at this stage is that the RPM increase which indicates slippage, and that it only ocurs at lockup. I drove the car last week towing my camper with a 'bypass' in place so the trans didn't go into lockup and had no problems.

In your opinion, would a cracked flex plate cause this only in lockup?

    Hi,

I have had EXACTLY this problem on a TD5 auto 110,

    changed the converter, fixed it,

it felt like the lock up clutch was 'skipping' or bouncing when it tried to lock and the more gas you gave it the more it skipped causing BIG vibrations, off the gas, let it lock and back on it was fine,

did you fit a different converter or rebuild the same one ?

    Dave

How well did they check the converter? Did they check the lock-up and balance of the unit?

I had to replace the TC and triangular mount plate due to cracking - it was causing vibration, this was done at 89,000ks.

Glad it's fixed Wardy, and yes, can only be the lockup clutch slipping.
