    cat removed from 02 td5 d2

i had this done today privately and while i cant really feel anydifference in accelleration, it does seem a bit smoother and perhaps freer before turbo kicks in. as ive mentioned in a few posts i have an annoying drone/engine vibration at around 2250rpms. its still there, but this has helped by about 30%. am i getting any more power from removing the cat? or will i get better fuel economy? cheers.

I don't know if it's been mentioned to you before, but the flexible joint in the downpipe can cause a vibration/rattle sometimes.

    Check your engine mounts.

How did you remove the Cat?

I think Simon may mean the centre muffler?! I have heard its not noticeable power wise, but may help with the spooling of the turbo...which may help me as I have TD5 Manual.

I have removed the centre muffler and it definitely helped the car get going below 1.8k

Yeah it might be more of an impact on a Defender though given the length of the pipes and the restriction that may cause.

I've removed my centre muffler on my 01 TD5 Auto Disco, definately made a noticeable difference in turbo spool-up and only slight increase in noise. My TD5 also has a Cat Converter which will be the next to go.

Yeah its on my list of mods to do, including EGR bypass and removing the hyclone type thingy from the air box.

engine mount been done (rhs) left is still fine. it is the cat i removed. i still have the first(centre muffler) and the rear muffler. will removing the centre muffler help too? what effect on cabin noise?

after a bit more driving today, it has more go above 3000rpm, especially in 2nd.

cat was removed by a simply cutting it out and welding in a piece of stainless steel in its place. it slips over and welded to the existing pipe at the engine side and welded as a direct mate-up(wrong terminology sorry) on the rear side.
