Cactus knock sensors
Hello.I have a 2000-2001 4.0L SE P38 Rangie. When accellerating, there is a pinging sound from the engine, sounding as if my car is a diesel. Also,my car looses power and i must drop back so as it can 'catch' up.Have put higher octane fuel, but to no avail.By the way,the car starts with no prob's and no sparking from the ignition leads....Any ideas?![]()

The datrastat is possibly breaking down..
Have it checked at a dealers they should run Diagnostics on it for you for nothing
Then it takes the guess work out of it
When my V8 was pinging, it was due to the O2 sensors in the exhaust system. One of them was horribly out of range, so the engine ECU was having a difficult time because one bank would be saying its very lean whilst the other bank would say it was very rich.
So the ECU has to default to enrichening the fuel mixture of the lean bank to save the engine, and that only caused the other bank to get even richer.
But I'm not 100% sure whether the P38A throughout its entire model life has O2 sensors in the exhaust or not.
As someone said, get the Testbook connected to your computer and check the logs for problems or look at the live readings when the engine is running. You'll work out pretty quickly what's not within normal working range.
