What would you expect to pay to have a zf rebuilt?

We have just returned from the Corner country nursing a damaged auto gearbox. The kickdown cable seized and the box would not change up into drive. After trying to free the cable we lost about 4L of oil due to a sump gasket leak. The box would take about 10km until it would change up in the morning but after another week of travelling it would take only 150m. The end of the storey is that I have had the disco to the auto shop the said the box had got so hot the kick down cable had melted inside the box and that is what had stopped it from changing up gears. They recommend a full rebuild. We had done another 2500km after the damage towing a van at highway speed so I was hoping it would have been a cheaper repair.

So what do you think it will cost?
Is there any mods to do to the ZF to make it stronger or better suited to towing and off roading?

    Thanks in advance.

    Rebuild $2500 to $3500.
Mine with heavt duty everything cost $4500 in 2004.
Obviously your box has drive still?
Check how quick it engages reverse. If it is smooth and instant then the damage should not be to much.
Also which model D1 or D2.
What you have done is probably burt the friction material in the clutch pack or torque converter. There are also some rubber gromets that break when cooked and bleed the pressure of so the clutch doesn't engage properly.
If you have the vehicle at home still and it does drive drop the oil and check it. Change the filter and fill with fresh oil and then test it again. This will also help clean it out. After that it becomes a pain in the but job.

I'd ask ZF how much for an exchange. They are in Doonside (western Sydney). I went there a couple of weeks ago to drop a Disco in for a gearbox swap.

Or ring A&B Automotive, in Dandenong South, VIC to get an idea of rebuilt box price plus shipping.

They are the ZF specialists in Melbourne whom all Land Rover dealers in metropolitan Melbourne use.

The quote is for $2500 so not as bad as it could be. I have a D1 TDI. the box went well into reverse but used to clunk. The oil was not as burnt as I have scene boxes.t was dark brown but but did not stink.
    Thanks George

Yup 12 month warrantee. Unfortunately we will only be doing low km in the next 12months. I have a leak in the transfere case that I was going to have done by MR in the future that they said they could look at as well. I may as well get it done. Bank has lots of money
