Hiya!!!
How about a slight amount of oil in the bowl?
Aaah, will check it out tomorrow and post pics.
My installation went out neat enough![]()

Hi Michele,
All looks fine - should be plenty of life left in the element yet.
Thanks mate!
Mucho reassuring!

So what was the result?
Are these things a must have, just or an interesting idea?
I only recently fitted my Provent and missed out all the intel,
how do you know when the vent pops ?
I gather you are lab testing the soot in the old elements, in how many klm should the filter be changed & do you still want the old elements ?
Mine is looking like Michels after only 2000 klm,
Would fitting a provent reduce exhaust smoke - I would not think so but my TD5 going flat chat in 4th towing a caravan up the Adelaide hills I was blowing no smoke, Im sure I was before ???
It is normal for the filter to be oily.
When the vent opens, oil/blowby will vent between the two halves of the top cap, so you will get oil dripping from the outer edge of the cap - and the outside of the provent housing below the cap will likely be oily.
Don't need any more of the 200 elements at this stage, however am looking for people in WA with truck/plant fleets to test the provent 400.
It is quite possible that the provent could reduce visible smoke if you have heavy blowby. Engine oil is much harder to burn than diesel.

Hi Ben,
thanks for the hint.
I missed that part.
I just did a calculation using the formula you suggested, and mine should last...120000 Km?!?
I replaced the element recently (190000 Km on the clock, the Cube is getting old and engine block is covered in oily sweat between the water pump and manifold, plus all the drivetrain is leaking slightly now).
It looked very oily and was literally oozing and dripping, so I didn't think twice and bought a new element (€ 40, ouch!).
I'll leave it in until the vent opens
I hope you're well and you'll soon travel to Karlsruhe again.
It's time for another beer, it's been too long...
