Max, my understanding is that EGR was introduced primarily to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and a side effect is that it increases soot loading in the oil, hence the reason for newer/better diesel lubes in the past few years.
FWIW, all 300tdi's sold here came sans EGR (it was blanked off) whereas UK Disco's had EGR to comply to Euro II (i think) pollution controls.
