    I forgot about this thread. I just went out to the shed to have a look, its the old MM with stuffed bearings. I vaguely remember now what the FIL did. This was back when the MM was about $600 or so to replace. He was very close to finishing when he said stuff it and got a MM.

    IIRC He got a bosch alternator and fitted it. It was easy enough to make spaces for it to fit, but in the end the drive pulley was off by 1mm or so causing the belt not to track true. He would of machined one part of it down to fit, but by this stage he came across a new MM for a price close to the Bosch unit so just put a mew MM back on and returned the Bosch.

    Sorry I thought it was a simple fix, but come to think there was a little bit of work in it. It was about 7 or so years ago now.
