They are made that way. The one on the right is a variable rate spring. there are two ways to construct it,
1, like that. (the softer rate is the closer wound section. As they compress and coil bind, it reduces the effective number of coils, increasing the spring rate)
    2, using taper wire.

rates are here land rover spring specifications

mine are the same as the one on the right in the front the rear stops are covers in mud and crap same as the top of the axel so its definitly not finding the stops the front stops are warn and the axel tubes polished where they rub or touch there often

well i pulled one rear shock out today and put a tape on it. and ramped it up to see what would happen well it flexed up real good the spring fell out but the other rear tyre rubed on the spring perch alot i have 33x12.5 rubber so need narrower rubber or off set wheels and longer shocks by at least 2 inches and longer springs it seems . with the shock bolted back on there was almost nill travel in the rear it was all working around the front axel

OME do make longer shocks for Landrovers about 60mm longer than standard that work brilliantly with a 2 inch lift. Part numbers N174(front) N175(rear), unfortunatly they are for export only though you can snag them if you annoy your dealer into annoying ARB for some. Don't listen if they say that they don't exist as they are not in the OME book for Aus, tell them to get off there a#se and track some down for you as you are the customer. I've been trying to get them available but have been told that i'd need to order 50 of each at a time to justify a production run(fair enough) if enough people start asking for them they might just make them localy available.
By the way did you guys know that OME's biggest sellers are Landrover gear and the biggest selling bullbars are Rodeo ones(world wide of course) i stick that to the Toyo and Nissan drivers when i can as this is really a pretty small market and the only one that they are big in.
