    not another egr thread :O)

    Hi Guys

    quick question...

is there any reason why the egr cannot be blanked off with a flat plate appropriately shaped to slot between the valve and the intake? obviously with a gasket either side..? im just thinking this then looks completely standard, including the wiring and operation... and me being as cheap as they come... is cheap to produce too... im guessing a 1.2mm or 2mm stainless plate should just about do it... or am i missing the point..?

    Thanks

    Steve

Don't think you'll have a problem just blanking it off on the exhaust side . You'll still have some restriction on the intake side though (the egr butterfly valve thingy) but at least you'll stop the engine ingesting more fresh crud.

It would be far better to take the chance to remove the egr valve and clean it out before reinstalling it if thats the way you want to go. There will be a fair bit of oily sludge in your intake manifold.
I made up a plastic scraper to pull out as much of the sludge as i could as i did'nt have the time to pull the intake manifold off completely to clean it out properly.

I plan to pull it all apart and clean it out properly when i flush out the intercooler and replace intercooler hoses.

    Cheers

nope thats exactly what some of the cheaper kits are.

however they are only really effective on the very early EGR kits as the laterones have both a valve like an enginve valve for letting the exhaust gasses in and a butterfly like a carby.

If the valve is the only problem then your blanking kit will be just the ticket but if your also having problems with the butterfly then your kit will address the bad gasses problem but not the additional restriction.

if you have 2 vac solenoids driving your egr you have the butterfly and a simple check by removing the hose on its front and applying vacume from something like a high quality vac brake bleeder will to the actuators will tell you if your butterfly is OK. mine was and I was only having the problem of the carbon deposits holding the egr open so the initial plan was to clean it up and block the vac pipes letting it look standard but I got the kit that I wanted to use (If I was going the replacement) at the right price and was going to do up the tutorial for the forum.
