    R380 gearbox issues

My '97 R380 gearbox jams the whole transmission if I select reverse on a slope that would have the vehicle rolling backwards. Also 2nd and 4th synchros are worn. This after 233,000 Km. Proposed remedy is to rebuild it,or swap it. Its a 'J' series box, so do I have to replace it with the same type or can I upgrade to the stronger "L" type , and if so , what if any modifications need to be made to make it fit.? Any suggestions on where to source a replacement would be appreciated as the price quoted by the local expert has frightened me. would I need to replace the transfer box as well,? And if I kept the old gearbox ,would a home rebuild sometime in the future be beyond an enthusiastic idiot? Thanks in advance for any advice. --- Don

This thread is pretty good on the subject.

    Defender Gearbox

I had mine rebuilt a couple of years ago at horrible expense. Only problem is that I expect it to come back changing like a Corolla, of course it doesn't.

    Cheers

Looking at that other link it would be worthwhile to look at importing a gearbox from the UK as the cost is very good aswell as the knowledge that they have been built by people with more experience in them.My steering box went belly up in my defender a couple of years ago and I bought a brand new one in from the old dart for less than a reco one in Oz.When mine gives up I will be looking at that option. Good point Pat.
I know someone who has had their R380 rebuilt twice now at a cost above that of a new gearbox and it's making the same noises it was originally sent in for.
This has happened in the space of several months.....

Thanks Guys, I looked at all that and also did the sums on the prices from ashcroft .I also saw the drama Roverrescue has had with his input gear. The converted prices from ashcroft are as follows R380 $A 950.00
    LT230 $A 837.00
    Total $A 1787.00
That leaves freight both ways as the old units are required to be sent back , as are their crates/ pallets or the core values can be paid , which for the two units is $A953.00 . I don't know if any tax would be payable to import these goods .My truck still goes OK ,it's really the reverse thing that concerns me .I feel I'm sitting on a time bomb with it. Anyhowthat all leaves the other questions . Upgrade to "L" series box ? possible? good or bad? any changes required? What about the average mug doing a rebuild later If I keep the old bits? --Don
