Thread: Anti-Stall and Traction Control Defender

Hi Guys,

I'm with you Capelandy, I have had my 08 defender for 5mths now and still the anti-stall is a pain on slow technical obsticals (exactly as you explained). Spoke to Land Rover and got the same reply. Those who haven't driven a 110 Puma in the bush it's "anti-stall", the TD5 dosen't have it nor will a mechanical governer give the same result, not even close.

For people fighting with their Puma antistall, this south african thread may be interesting. They explain that touching the break somehow kicks the antistall in or something. I have only had my Puma for a few months so have not yet come accross descent difficulties, but I am waiting to see how it will perform...

soz if some one elce has sead this. but i was in the same boat,,, disco ecu in a fender, and it went well,,, but no tc, and you will never get it with a disco ecu, even if its programed as a fender,

and the temp gage will allways stay the other way round,, an have the tc light on all the time, , iv tryed everythign to program it as a fender but it wont work proply, you need a fender flashabull ecu, i just bort one from the UK for 190gbp ,, and it come with a abs ecu and a kea fob,

Interesting thread. I cannot see why anyone is finding the anti-stall a problem, I think it's absolutely fantastic. The 1:62 crawl ratio is great for descents and if you need to go slower then you can just brake. If you need to go slower than the limit of brake pressure in first low...can't see that happening too often. Yes you can go too slow in first low and cause a skid (not a lockup as the wheels still turn), solution is accelerate or shift up a gear.

The TD5 does have anti-stall but it's not as effective, and the crawl ratio is only 1:45 or so.

Agree the TDCi RPM shouldn't be raised to 1000, I can see why it has been, but for me those drivers just need training.

As for traction control, it's a great thing too, leave it on! In some cases it is inferior to lockers, in other cases it is superior, and much depends on the design of the ETC.

Totally agree with this. This is exactly what we found too. I get away with it apart from the temp gauge as I dont have abs/tc

I was wondering, could one fit after market lockers to a Puma and somehow wire it in so that when the lockers were turned on, the TC was turned off. Best of both worlds! If an obstacle cannot accomplished with TC, try again with the lockers on and TC off.

I have even noticed that Rangie Spares has diff lockers in its list of Puma accessories. I wonder if it is something that has been done or if it is a mistake on their website...

Why not just have them both working at once? Well, actually, the TC probably won't work much if the axle is locked.....
