    81 RRC voltgage

    Hi,

I have a Smith's volt meter in the Rangie which hasn't worked since I put a new alternator in a couple of years ago. It did work up until then. Not sure of the typoe of alternator though.

No when I hook it up, the needle swings straight through the arc to sit at 3 o'clock, rather than sitting at 6 o'clock.

I have tried different earths and power but still get the same result. I even tried another gauge and thought something was going to burst into flames as the wire got hot very quickly and the fuel pump slowed considerably and sparks jumped when I connected the terminals - like it was shorting out...??

Any ideas? In the pic below, I assume the +ve terminal is LHS and -ve if RHS? If I swap them arround nothing happens at all.

    Thanks

    Stu

    Hi Stu,

Does your meter read correctly (12-13V) if you hold the two leads directly onto the battery terminals? If not, the meter is faulty. If so, the wiring is crook (What voltage readings do "six o'clock" and "three o'clock" actually mean? Perhaps a photo of the face of the gauge would help?)

If the meter seems to be OK directly connected to the battery, the easiest fix might be to run a new twin-core cable from the battery terminals to the meter in the dash. Voltmeters should draw negligible current, so light twin-core speaker wire should be OK.

The other meter you tried - sure it wasn't an Ammeter? Ammeters present basically a dead short when connected between +12V and earth.

Finally had a chance to look at this. Yep, if I hold the gauge wires on the battery it swings from left side throughthe arc to right side. In the middle straight down is "Normal" according to the gauge.

So.... anyone have a Smiths gauge they'd like to get rid of?! Also maybe an Smiths Oil temp gauge too? (I assume they were original) or can I get away with using other gauges but using standard transmitters/ switches?

    Thanks

I don't know about brands but many people here have swapped gauges to after market so it can be done.
I think your hardest job will be getting one the correct size.
