Thread: Timing belt on the 300tdi getting close 80000k.

this is one of those lottery factor things.

IF you change it it would have lasted for another 100,000 km and never given a problem

if you dont it'll snap tomorrow and cost you the cost of the replacement and a lot more on top...


IFIWM Id change it as soon as you had the finances or the favors owed to get it done.

If it had the kit installed it should go to the 100k. The first one did without the alignment kit so I see no reason this one won't. Ours has done 75k since the kit 2 was installed and the original belt was still fine. I am going to put another 15k on it before changing it.

Damed if you do damed if you don't, Oh and the mechanic could alway stuff up the installation and it will be just like it snapped anyway (seen it done)

You got the kit done for peace of mind let the money you spent pay for itself.

I'm in exactly the same boat, in a couple of weeks i will buy the kit then find time to do it- fingers crossed.

Mine had done 137,000 k on an unmodified model requiring the minor repair kit. It was very close, and the casing had plenty of "timing belt julienne" in it.

Cost $1855 to have changed.

When I bought the Defender six years ago I'd heard plenty of horror stories re belts going TWANG, and had mine changed by the nearest dealer as soon as I bought it (less than 80,000 original km) and the belt cam out looking like new.
The next time I stretched it out to 100,000km, made all the tools I needed and did it myself and it came out looking like it'd just been installed with no debris in the case at all.

It's just gone 60,000km since then and I'm umming and ahing on whether to change it now, so go figure......

I've been going to do mine since I bought the Disco 2 years ago. I've done 50000km in that time. Don't know when it was last done ... I just can't find the time and money to do it. I'll have to do it soon though or I'll end up another timing belt horror story.

I wouldn't worry to much.Mine broke a month after it was changed and did no damage,they quite often don't and no one I know has had any problems after it happening.It is like Td5's stories,you only hear the horror ones.Mine snapped 5 years ago and a new one was fitted and it hasn't missed a beat since.All of them went the full 100k's and they all looked good enough to do more.Not sure about the $1855 job,it cost me $550 6 months back and that was the lot except front cover.
