    Boost gauge - 300tdi

    HI All,

My boost sender arrived yesterday and now i want to fit it! I kinda jumped the gun a little and drilled and tapped a hole in the inlet manifold last week on the 300 TDI just before the top intercooler hose but i installed the sender and get no reading

I helped a mate fit one to his TD5 and we installed it on the intake manifold just before the intercooler so we don't get the 2 psi drop across the intercooler. (he go that advice from the bloke from TD5 alive.)

Am i best to tap into one of the black plastic lines that run from the turbo? If so which one will give me the most precise reading? The sender i have is a mechanical to electronic so it's a canister so i have to have a sturdy mounting place for it and somewhere easy to get.

    Thanks
    Mick

what ever you do don't touch the Black Plastic Hose to Bosch Fuel Pump ,this carries your Boost Pressure signal to VE Bosch unit , Easiest way to do is buy a T-Piece from an Auto shop a couple of meters of Pressuried ruber hose and circlips ,cut a short piece and run from the output of the Wastegate actuator to one side of the T-Piece , the Middle Piece will go off to your Boost Gauge and another piece of hose from the Other side of T-Piece to to where the Pressure siganl goes back to your Fuel Pump Simple, if you want Pics Ill post some tomorrow , very east old chap.

    Mick,
You want the sender installed in the intake manifold. If you plumb it in to the wastegate pressure line you will see the boost pressure the turbo is producing but you wont see what the engine is actually recieving.

Are you sure the gauge was wired up correctly? I understand its a commom mod to move the boost sensing line for the wastgate from the turbo outlet to the intake manifold so the engine see's the actual wastegate pressure not wastegate pressure minus cooler restriction

    cheers

30 bar mate...... 441psi sounds reasonable for a 300 tdi....im sorry mate but i dont understand what your asking.

IIRC 300tdi's run 11psi stock so a 0 to 15 psi gauge would suffice or a 0 to 20 if you plan to tweat the boost up.

lol why i was asking was if he was trying to read of on a 30 bar scale he wouldint get a reading at all or not much of one.

i have seen plenty of guys try and fitt industrial gages, and that just doint work so well.

but a question, did you run the disco up a hill at 2500 - 3000 rpm, foot to the floor and try and get a reading them ??

    Mick,

I'm not really familiar with that type of install but i can't see any issues about tapping off the outlet of turbo to read boost preassure signals at that point , If the compressor is boosting @ and the vehicle is pulling away nice & hard then I'm not concerned about what pressures exist on intake side this means compressor is pushing plenty of air into Intake manifold considering all Pipework is intact ( and all my pipe work has been check for leaks and there aren't any ) so there should be no reason as to why a 300tdi donk should not be getting plenty of air on the intake side if turbo boost gauge is indicating that it's is boosting where pressure signals has been tapped off the output of wastegate , so personally what boost pressure is being recieved on the intake manifold should not be off any major concern if all Pipe work is intact ,but having said that there is more that 1 way to skin a cat. so to speak
