Kaymar wheel carrier
Hi,
can anyone tell me if a kaymar swingaway wheel carrier bolts to the rear crossmember of a defender uesing it's own pre threaded metal plates inside the crossmember, or does it use the pre threaded plates that landrover supply for bolting the grab handle on with?
There is not mutch room for a spanner inside the crossmember for uesing a standard nut/bolt setup.
I have the option on a second hand one but there are no plates with it and I dont know if they would be supplyed with it when new.
has anyone fitted one, either from new or secondhand?

I have one which has a backing plate. I believe originally they were bolted directly to the rear x-member but there was some issues with the rear member fracturing - hence the support plate.
Try ringing Kaymar they should be able to advise.

New ones over here come with a plate with 2 studs welded on it. The studs protrude through existing holes in the the cross member - though they need drilling out to accept the M10 stud (10mm holes in cross member).

I'm still in the process of redesigning the way of fixing the carrier to the rear crossmember but the original method of fixing was 2 10mm bolts welded to a plate with a wire welded to the plate so that it could be worked into place there are 2 of these plates and 2 ordinary bolts where you can get at them by hand, in my post on carrier damage is a photo of the plates.
my progress on the redesigned fixing method is that it's all ready to go other than the crush tubes, just need a few more hours in the day and a couple more days in the week to do half the things I need to do!
tried to talk with kaymar about how best to deal with the damage and modifiy the fixing method, sent photos and talked to them twice still waiting for them to come up with something (they said its never happened before! and they're busy at the moment) and that was weeks ago so it seems they're only interested in selling product
I still think the carrier is well designed just the fixing method needs some work
