How about buying a test light? better yet a multimeter
Most rover's and pommy crap for that matter, have individually fused lights, so check them
gaday not sure if this is the right place to put this thread but it seemed the most logical place so here goes
just recently the high beam on my dads defender stopped workin only on the right hand side though. the park light on the right side has gone as well but that been like that for ages.
i checked the globe on the park light and it wasnt blown, and the contacts looked pretty clean so i thought maybe a wiring problem further back? i checked the headlight and it didnt look blown either (they are H4s) could there be something further back that is buggered? or should i get a new globe and see if that works?
when a globe is blown it usually goes black right? the headlight globe was still clear and both of the element things were still intact.
thanks for ur help in advance
Jock

I would be looking for a faulty earth, but using a meter or test light you should be able to find the fault fairly easily.

i just checked the lights then, the park light was blown or is now anyway so that bits fixed. but i got the multimeter onto the headlight the low beam is reading 12-13 voltswhich i guess is the right amount because it works
the high beam has 0.2 volts ....any theorys? broken/chewed wire?
Thanks
Yes. I wish I had known or remembered that a couple of weeks a go when my passenger side high beam disappeared.
It was only after I had pulled the bulb out and found it was OK that I thought to check the fuse.
I just sort of assumed there was only one headlight fuse or perhaps two.
I didn't expect four.

i checked the fuses 4 times now i even swapped them round a couple of times. still to no avail.
i heard of these wiring upgrades? is that wot i need ?
how much and who do i talk to?
thanks
The parking lights will be the fuse.
If a trailer plug is fitted it is wired off one side of the vehicles parking lights so the fuse on one side of the parking lights tends to blow until a slightly bigger fuse is fitted as the trailer will add extra load.
The head lights could be the switch on the steering columb as it takes full current without the use of a relay and the extra strong H4 lights will draw a little bit more current through the switch which is not the best designed thing in the world .
Dunno if headlight wiring upgrade will fix the problem, but here's the link -
Dave's Interesting Things - Defender Headlight Wiring Upgrade Kit
My last round of headlight dramas, third in the last couple of years, was a headlight switch problem, fixed by a lot of soldering and butchery to the headlight switch, and upgrading headlight wiring to reduce load on the switch.
Cheers
Simon
i wouldnt have though it would be the switch because only one highbeam is working?
