I've rebuilt a few diffs, mostly race cars and we never wired the CWP bolts, only loctited, and they were all fine. The first race car diff I rebuilt was under the guidance of a NASCAR and touring car mechanic (and ex-aircraft mechanic), and he only used loctite, too.
Yes, wiring bolts is still used in critical applications in aircraft, and you can wire the diff bolts if you like, but drilling bolt heads in high tensile bolts is painful (been there, done that, even made a jig to make it easier) and I'd still use loctite instead of wiring because

    a. I don't have wire twist pliers
    b. I've never been able to do it near as neatly as the blokes I know that work on aircraft
From my experiences the wiring doesn't maintain tension, it just stops the bits from falling out if they do come lose.

Trick from my old racing days.... Doule up the wire and hold one end in the vice and the other into a drill chuck and then let the drill do the work. Comes out perfectly.

In each case the cause was the bolts securing the crown wheel becoming loose (they are only loctited these days instead of as with the Series vehicles being wired together). Movement between the C/W and hemisphere then causes a bolt head to shear off, whch then gets mixed up between the C/R and Pinion - or maybe some other moving parts.

In both cases the vehicles had, at some time in the past, been driven for a few hundred kms on the front diff only - due to some failure in the rear drivetrain - broken axle or drive shaft uni joint.

Has your's ever been driven on the front diff only?

Blew my TDI Defender front some time back at 180,000km and yes like Roger mentioned, sometime after driving home from Watagans with broken rear axle (before Maxi Drive fitted) on front-wheel drive.

Funnily enough Roger was on that trip with me as well as the two TD5's in the Simpson, of which I was participant as well, the Td5's managed only about 135,000 km each.

I had LR replace a rear diff under warranty. They did the diff centre. I think they did the job in 2 days so I can't imagine why it would be going to take a month?

    That's crazy.

Yes....the hold up isn't the job itself . The dealer is saying they are booked solid with "retail" work (read: RR Sport services!). Warrenty work is not worth as much per hour than full wack retail rate to the general public.

I was told that hopefully someone cancels then they will get onto mine.

Rang LR Customer Care this morning. They agree it is unacceptable time frame and are now liasing with the dealer on my behalf. I was told if it takes more than a week l will be provided with another Defender to drive.

Waiting to hear back from them.
